A targeted medicine extends survival for some people with lung cancer

What is established. In a phase 3 trial involving 338 people in 26 countries, divarasib was compared with two already approved medicines. All participants had advanced lung cancer with a specific mutation called KRAS G12C and had already received other treatments. Median survival was 17.7 months with divarasib, versus 12 months with the comparison treatments. The risk of death was 44% lower, and the risk of the disease progressing or causing death was 42% lower.

What is developing. This tablet blocks the abnormal protein that helps some cancer cells multiply. The results were presented at the European ESMO oncology congress and published in a peer-reviewed medical journal. Health authorities still need to decide whether this experimental treatment can be approved.

Limits and uncertainties. This is not a cure for every lung cancer: the mutation is found in about 14% of non-small-cell lung cancers. The trial was open-label, excluded people with certain untreated brain metastases and was funded by the companies developing the medicine. Longer follow-up is still needed.

Sources — 25 October 2026: UT MD Anderson Cancer Center; New England Journal of Medicine, original study.

2. Two major imperial monuments in Huê are being restored ahead of schedule

What is established. In Vietnam, restoration of Can Chanh Palace and Thai Mieu temple is progressing faster than announced. Can Chanh, built in 1804 and destroyed in 1947, is now expected to be reconstructed by November 2027 instead of April 2029. The first stage at Thai Mieu — walls, gates and foundations — is expected to finish in December 2026, about twenty months early.

What is developing. Work on Thai Mieu’s main building is due to begin in early 2027 and finish in 2031. Huê has already spent nearly 4.8 trillion dong on more than 200 heritage elements and plans 27 further projects between 2026 and 2030.

Limits and uncertainties. Neither monument is finished yet. These dates are targets and can change. The quality of the reconstruction and its faithfulness to the historical structures will also have to be assessed after completion.

Sources — 25 October 2026: Tuoi Tre News; DTiNews.

3. Wildlife populations are broadly stable across UNESCO-designated sites

What is established. A first joint assessment of more than 2,000 UNESCO-designated sites says their wildlife populations are broadly stable while wildlife is declining worldwide. These biosphere reserves, geoparks and heritage sites contain more than 60% of mapped species and are home to about 900 million people. UNESCO says the daily work of residents and Indigenous peoples plays an important part in that stability.

What is developing. UNESCO presented the findings at the global biodiversity conference in Armenia. The aim is to expand approaches that work: scientific monitoring, restoring habitats and making decisions with local communities.

Limits and uncertainties. A global average does not mean that every species or every site is doing well. More than one site in four could reach a critical tipping point by 2050 without stronger action. Climate change, land conversion and invasive species remain major threats.

Sources — 21 October 2026 (updated 22 October): UNESCO, COP17 presentation; UNESCO, “People and Nature in UNESCO-Designated Sites” report.

Three verified positive stories: a targeted lung-cancer advance, Huê heritage and biodiversity across UNESCO sites.

[109

post-3584","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-other
["GET
